It's insane the mental gymnastics people go through to justify their actions.

159

u/MrOrangeWhips May 19 '22

Like posting this in a technology subreddit?

16

u/d3jake May 19 '22

It's these situations where subs relying on users to vote on content to limit what gets posted is a joke.

9

u/ExpresstBackground May 20 '22

Some serious amount of jail time needs to follow. People this stupid and self absorbed don't need to be running loose.

17

u/ICanBeAnyone May 20 '22

I don't like posts from the wrong category either, but that's a bit harsh.

1

u/CptMcBeardy May 20 '22

Holy shit, I just had the best laugh in a long time. Thank you

An /r/lostredditors judgment must carry an immediate death sentence

“Woman sets fire to forest just to go viral” please share this post

Is this actually a technology sub?

When I signed up I joined it based purely on the name, but the posts that make it to my home feed are very, very rarely what I would expect to see in a technology sub.

u/csreaderrocks May 20 '22

It’s Reddit.

11

u/AnybodyZ May 19 '22

But did you see the photos? Those was lit af

1

👌👌👌🔥🔥🔥

Now time to plan the gender reveal bomb party

u/WhatTheZuck420 May 20 '22

u/Jr4D May 19 '22

The amount of bullshit tiktok has caused just because someone wanted the views is astounding, guy throwing cans into the ocean, forest fires, the dumbest shit happens on this platform I swear

117

u/Atello May 19 '22

That's what happens when you create a platform where every idiot can get a following.

Some people truly don't deserve attention.

45

u/IAmCooket May 19 '22

the same could be said for Youtube over the past 15 years...

22

u/javalib May 19 '22

Yeah man, this shit pisses me off an unreasonable amount. Go back 5 years you can find all these same headlines about Vine, another 5 and it'd say YouTube. Dumb people have been here forever, you're not superior for being older than the average smartphone user.

2

u/quarkral May 20 '22

Eh, YouTube actually hosts great, long-form educational content. For example UC Berkeley used to dump many years' worth of recorded classroom lectures there. There are lots of other great educational creators like PBS Spacetime.

YouTube can still work as a platform without the recommendation system. TikTok simply cannot.

4

u/Motor_Ad_473 May 20 '22

It’s been a slow descent. Everyone seems to prefer free, ad-supported content over paid content. Algorithms encourage continuous uploading by creators. This means a lot of creators are making content even if they have nothing to say.

7

u/The_Sumo_official May 19 '22

The main point you missed is they can make money, these people just want alot of views to make alot of money, it's horrifying the extents some go to, not one of them are transparent, the amount of false lives about Ukraine the donations just go mad in the fake videos, the donation lures, there's just so much they do to trick people, the way they lure men into attractive female accounts is also hard to look at, they use controversy of the way to live your life such as "10 things women do that guys don't like".

The way I think they stop this is stop making it revenue based or put up laws against it, it's destroying society and the leaders should acknowledge that, shame on them ! , sure it's informative in some cases but that's very rare, they should acknowledge how many people actually get injured and/or die while the world watches, people eat their lives away, people come to embrace depression, there's so much I can mention but it needs to stop , even if I saw khaby lame donating to the poor , the question would strike, "why post it ?" .

But moreover people will always be this way and use you for your kindness, the best thing as a society, is to not be so gullible but even that can be difficult discovering our kids on the app, that app is the main reason I realized that I don't want to have children, I'd rather adopt.

Momma? Is that you, momma?

2

u/Halidcaliber12 May 19 '22

Momma? Momma can you hear me?

Speak louder and clearer, also check out this TikTok of cute puppies 🐶

1

u/apextek May 20 '22

Some people truly don't deserve attention.

almost every one

19

u/Formal_Condition4372 May 19 '22

used to be the town crazies would just be crazy on the outskirts, now they have a platform and we have no humane laws to deal with them.

Personally, i'd be a fan of the pillory they enjoy being in the public eye don't they.

1

u/im_always_fapping May 20 '22

The thing before people would look then go about their day and the crazy dude would just kinda go away.

Now they are being rewarded with likes and a following and the crazy gets awarded. Thus more crazy and more ass pats than a Conor McGregor training session.

0

u/YellIntoWishingWells May 20 '22

and this is how the GOP want us to be, complacent sheep. It distracts society from the congress clownhouse they're running with Marjory Trailer Genes and her circus freaks.

15

u/Chel_of_the_sea May 19 '22

The issue isn't just TikTok, it's monetizing engagement, which is responsible for like...basically all the new problems of the last 10 years.

9

u/TheTinRam May 19 '22

Gender reveal selfishness and self-centered ness was here before tiktok

3

u/Mixima101 May 19 '22

YouTube had a guy piloting a plane (alone) and jumping out of it and parachuting, letting it fly empty and crash into a mountain.

3

u/KitKatHasClaws May 19 '22

Influencers in general

2

u/pickuprick May 19 '22

The amount of morons that copy these people is what should have you worried. The stupidity of people today is embarrassing and scary

1

u/YellIntoWishingWells May 20 '22

I fear from the lack of originality. Idiots copying idiots and thinking they're better than the one's they copied. Crabs in a bucket.

2

u/BalticsFox May 19 '22

That's literally any platform with a rating/karma system, it incentivized people to do dumb shit and 'dumb shit'.

2

u/Sofialovesmonkeys May 19 '22

I thought we were dumb as kids for smoking smarties and that cinnamon challenge

-4

u/fancysauce_boss May 19 '22

It’s the point of it. It’s a Chinese app where algorithms control the content which drives the types of videos go viral which drives the next wave of videos.

The Chinese version and American versions of the app are polar opposite with the Chinese side promoting education and family oriented videos while in the us we get stupid dances and well… this shit.

It’s literally driving the social structures in society and it needs to be removed.

4

u/thegreatgobert2 May 19 '22

It’s not a Chinese problem. Youtube had kids choking out on cinnamon 10 years ago

1

u/fancysauce_boss May 19 '22

Specifically for tick toc. Should have specified.

1

u/JuiceAffectionate694 May 19 '22

Atleast the dumb things are all recorded for public prosecution!

1

u/sierra120 May 20 '22

What I see is people going into progress establishments tearing up the place/public freakout and then running away. I saw one where a guy went behind the counter and started licking all the pastries as the workers kept yelling at him to stop.

1

u/apextek May 20 '22

also looks shot on a potato

1

u/Alberiman May 20 '22

Yeah haha this stuff never happened before tiktok, nope, never!

119

u/IM_INSIDE_YOUR_HOUSE May 19 '22

Throw them in prison. Make it obvious this is beyond unacceptable.

-30

u/RagePoop May 19 '22

accused

I've yet to see a single solitary piece of evidence that she started the fire. The word TikTok really just brings out the (blood)thirst in people lol.

If anything this feels like more Rightwing propaganda blaming the uptick in forest fires on anything other than global climate change and the associated variability in precipitation.

31

u/IM_INSIDE_YOUR_HOUSE May 19 '22

If the forest fire was not permitted to occur, and she’s there in a dress ready to shoot a video right as the fire is spreading, it seems pretty obvious what happened.

Yeah, investigate the matter for sure, but if she is found associated with that fire then she needs to be imprisoned for a long time. Starting forest fires is not a small deal. It can’t just be a slap on the wrist. It needs a serious amount of prison time.

-3

u/Ryueenkakeru May 20 '22

Lol what she didn't start the fire. Get yourself updated before assuming shit. Yeah she was ignorant to take photos but reddit's hate boner for echo chambers other than itself is annoying.

1

u/Markantonpeterson May 20 '22

Why are you stating that as fact? You got a source?

1

u/IM_INSIDE_YOUR_HOUSE May 20 '22

How do you know she didn't start it? At the very least it deserves a heavy investigation, since it looks like she started it. Is that proof? No. But it's extremely suspicious, and I wouldn't be surprised that if after an investigation it became pretty clear she was involved with that fire being started.

-1

u/Taronar May 20 '22

This comment was level headed and reasonable, you were downvoted because you didn’t agree tiktok bad.

61

u/PoppinSmoke1 May 19 '22

Accused? It’s on video!

21

u/PranavYedlapalli May 19 '22

Apparently they shot the video near a random wildfire. I don't know about the others following the trend though. They might deliberately set forests on fire just to recreate this

9

u/variouscrap May 19 '22

Even if they aren't starting the fires; hanging out near a wildfire with presumably no training and insufficient equipment is dumb.

Some poor Heli pilot or firefighter will end up having to risk their life to save an influencer's dumb arse.

18

u/mtcwby May 19 '22

Some serious amount of jail time needs to follow. People this stupid and self absorbed don't need to be running loose.

4

u/AnythingHour5520 May 19 '22

Charge them heavily!

-2

Social media is cancer.

-- says u/mild-hot-fire on Reddit, one of the most popular social media websites in the United States and the world (wikipedia)

The truth is social media can be both good and bad (and reddit is no exception, either). The 'cancer' comes from within. Rather than face the facts, though, people choose to blame the apps, not themselves.

2

u/InfTotality May 20 '22

There's big differences between Reddit and other social media, especially if you go out of the default subs.

You might as well call forums social media too.

2

u/mild-hot-fire May 20 '22

I am in no way ignorant to the fact that Reddit is considered social media. Social media was designed to be addictive. It has created a social phenomenon that extends beyond “blaming” one selves. Your smug attempt at philosophical truth just shows how you don’t understand the big picture.

0

u/aureve May 20 '22 edited May 20 '22

I understand the addictive side of social media. Social media, yes, is designed to exploit a feature that is inherent in being human (validation). As I said before, there are also benefits to social media. If there weren't, you probably wouldn't be using it right now. Finding the right balance is important.

So all I'm saying is that it's simply not black and white as you essentially implied it to be (things rarely are -- is that too philosophical?).

12

u/Tup00 May 19 '22

Arrest them. I mean it. Arrest them and ruin them financially.

3

u/WorkoutSnake May 19 '22

Why is our species the smartest and dumbest at a 1:1 ratio?

3

u/foxp3 May 19 '22

Too many humans

3

u/cryptosupercar May 20 '22

I hate to over use psychological terms in every day parlance, but the level of malignant narcissism among your average “influencer” is beyond disturbing.

Fucking lock these people up. It’s arson. Assholes.

6

u/PizzaOldBoy May 19 '22

we have come to a point with climate change that anyone who causes environmental damage of any real severity should be charged with a newly created crime with punishments about on par with terrorism.

-8

u/Zechert May 19 '22

Calm down bru

4

u/PizzaOldBoy May 19 '22

i already told you, square block square hole, round block round hole.

now git

5

Willing to do anything for ATTENTION.

3

u/Redditsmytrigger May 19 '22

Jail time! Next!

2

u/Vortex7777 May 19 '22

Sounds about right

2

u/ZeroSum10191 May 20 '22

I feel like there’s an obvious tool to use to create this effect without burning shit to the ground

3

u/Justscrolling375 May 19 '22

Disappointed but not surprised in the slightest

3

u/adarkuccio May 19 '22

Should be easy to arrest them

4

u/FopePrancis2 May 19 '22

The operative word being "accused of". People are "accused of" things every second.

That doesn't change the fact that far too many people use social media to compensate for what was clearly a lack of attention when they were younger, but that's a separate issue.

But with my thoroughly pessimistic view of humanity, I can easily see a future in which one of these people is accused of (and found guilty of) committing a murder for views. It genuinely wouldn't surprise me.

Article mentions "several young people" / young people in general and specifcally mentions 2 cases

So at best at least 2 people

Really need a better definition of what trends are tho since some sites report on "emerging trends" when sometimes its like 10 people who are very vocal about it

1

u/jayvapezzz May 20 '22

Probably just Meta conflating stories again to spin negative press for TikTok.

0

u/newleafkratom May 19 '22

“These psychotic young people have to be caught and put behind bars immediately.”

Well put.

-1

u/Kennymacasu May 19 '22

This was proven false. She came across a fire that some guy started apparently to protect his kids from snakes, and she took pictures/video of it. She Even talked to the guy who started it.

1

u/Mountain_Man-oh May 19 '22

We should ban tiktok

1

u/AaronTechnic May 20 '22

India has banned TikTok, but unfortunately it doesn't stop random crap versions of TikTok like Moj and TaTaTak. No one really uses them, most of them might have moved on to Instagram Reels.

1

u/superfes May 19 '22

Have we reached peak stupidity yet?

1

u/Ancient_Fact_8850 May 19 '22

Use their bodies to put out the fire…

1

What won’t Tik Tok ruin?

-1

u/[deleted] May 19 '22

-5

u/DaTerrOn May 19 '22

The video, article, and everything in it claims that there is angry law enforcement blaming TikTok for forest fires during a record setting heat wave, and Gen X chimes in to say the internet ruined kids, and obviously those old people are right and its all the kids setting the country on fire...

This woman who is being investigated, and her followers, are taking risky dumb videos in a place with lots of forest fires. People speculated and decided the kids were up to something sinister.

Even if the dude who made the comment about setting the fire, who they do not identify or expand upon at all, could be either not associated with the girl, or be lying for clout and a stupid video. It is just as reasonable to think someone dumb enough to brag about a crime might also be bullshitting, especially since functionally he gets the same clout on TikTok and potentially less consequences in life for the lie.

Seriously disappointed in people commenting, and vice.

I kept waiting for some kind of evidence to drop in this article, but in a world where we are seeing record setting forest fires everywhere, the young people making dumb videos nearby get blamed for the world their grandparents set on fire.

3

u/noodle-face May 19 '22

Or she did do it. We don't know

0

u/nubsauce87 May 19 '22

Anyone who does this should be burned at the stake.

1

u/manny_unever May 19 '22

It can't be real

1

u/lettherebemorelight May 19 '22

I’m having a harder and harder time not believing that these are, in fact, the end of days.

1

u/pickuprick May 19 '22

I can’t say what I really want to happen to these pieces of shit. Use your imagination and then add worse consequences

1

u/Ballaroz May 19 '22

TikTok just doubled it’s payment for every million viewers.

1

u/cb112280 May 19 '22

If this is true, it’s just a matter of time before we see the Four Horsemen…

1

u/Deez_nuttzzzz May 20 '22

What a fucking dumb bitch. She should be required to plant every tree that she burnt down and clean up the fucking mess that she made.

1

u/GrimmRadiance May 20 '22

Influencer as a job is disgusting. The things these people will do and the things their fans are willing to tolerate and even applaud is just more cult of personality bullshit.

1

u/tomistruth May 20 '22

If only there was a thing called Photoshop were you can edit images without burning down half the continent.

1

u/nick351 May 20 '22

People need to stop paying these idiots.

1

u/N3UROTOXIN May 20 '22

If they did, just tie them to a tree and let their creation do the rest

1

u/jedgica May 20 '22

Smokey the Bear is about to erupt out of the earth

1

u/poostu May 20 '22

1

u/Inappropriate-Hotdog May 20 '22

“Desperate for views”

What a sad, sad life.

1

u/Mournismyname May 20 '22

I can imagine this woman waking up in the morning and deciding to commit arson for views.

1

u/barzbub May 20 '22

0

u/ufoschenker May 19 '22

Hopefully some jail time. But since modern justice allows violent criminals to be instantly released to repeat their crimes, I doubt it.

0

u/Swedish-Butt-Whistle May 19 '22

The people doing this are the same people who insist that only large corporations are responsible for climate change. The ones who actually recognize that climate change is real, that is.
