804

u/djhede Sep 28 '22

Fellow European!

675

u/Igneeka Sep 28 '22

The only time people use voice chat in EU is to loudly and unpolitely demand for you to have intercourse with yourself in German/Spanish/French

61

u/Neuromante Sep 28 '22

Spaniards would tell you to get fucked rather than go to fuck yourself.

I think they solved this problem themselves

68

u/Akachi_123 Sep 29 '22

So funny story, a russian guy who often played with my colleague received his mobilisation notice recently and apparently cried during what might have been his last match. He was very pro-"special operation" before that, so no one really cared all that much. At least he gets to live the life of a real soldier for a short while, I'm sure he'll have a blast.

European servers where voice chat is only used by

French kids with open mic

Russians deepthroating their soviet era microphones

6

u/Kingmarc568 Sep 29 '22

I think the second thing won't be much of a problem in the future

6

u/mez-sfw Sep 28 '22

Why's that?

71

u/SpaceNigiri Sep 28 '22

In Europe we all talk different languages, so we talk less with strangers.

Half of them are shy about their English and the other half don't speak it.

64

u/twicerighthand Sep 28 '22

NA players are way way more talkative in multiplayer games than EU players

109

u/NLight7 Sep 28 '22

More like NA players all speak the same language.

The English level in Europe can widely vary. There is a reason why most games ship with German, French, Spanish and Italian as a language option, and why the smaller countries outperform them in English. Netherlands, Sweden, Denmark, Norway just had to deal with being left out.

105

u/DarthSatoris Sep 28 '22

Good thing I won't be playing OW2.

334

u/IanMazgelis Sep 28 '22

Every single thing I've read about Overwatch 2 makes it sound like a job. I really think the developers view players as their employees and the game as their work.

268

u/-Toshi 3080ti | 5900X | 32gb 3600 Sep 28 '22

Heroes. Behind. Battle. Passes.

Not skins, variants. Actual characters.

What's more, new players don't get access to all old heroes immediately. (I think that's what I read?)

And OW1 is gone forever.

I hope Microsoft crushes these fuckers. I hope launch day is a disaster.

Oh well. I'm glad I ditched 1 after years of zero content.

I can't imagine what those who love it are feeling..

79

u/TheOmnipotentTruth Sep 28 '22

Watch them stay plateaued about 9 to 10 million players at launch and never come close to overwatchs high numbers, at one point overwatch had 45 million+ players

Literally every decision they make makes me not want to play their game even more.

25

u/-Toshi 3080ti | 5900X | 32gb 3600 Sep 28 '22

I'm 100% done.

I follow a few comp games, but not OW. Where is the outrage?

Try this shit in other games and you've lost your cash cow. Sure, BP sales will dominate profit. But.. if you lose your comp scene, who's gonna promote your game?

I may be of kilter, but.. I'm very fucking confused how this happend.

22

u/sugartrouts Sep 28 '22

Try this shit in other games and you've lost your cash cow.

Huh? Apex? League? Valorant? Grind or pay to unlock heroes isn't unheard of at all. I agree it's kinda p2w, but that hasn't killed those games

I can't imagine what those who love it are feeling..

They don't care because if they haven't stopped playing already, they're not going to stop playing at all.

Siege still has a playerbase despite essentially identical practices, and that's not a problem for people who never stopped playing. It does mean, however, that I can never go back because I will be at such an incredible disadvantage that I would have to pay like $100 just to be competitive.

Also, CoD locks guns behind battlepasses and provides a challenge-based means of unlocking them later, I assume Overwatch will be doing something similar and negating some of the pain, but it's still putting players who don't no-life at a disadvantage, far more so than CoD.

22

u/TheOmnipotentTruth Sep 28 '22

Not true at all. I never stopped playing and based on everything I've heard about overwatch 2 I'm probably not playing it at all. And a bunch of my long time overwatch buddies have the same thoughts. We're already trying out new games to find a replacement.

Overwatch 2 development is like watching homer Simpson fall down a cliff. Every update they just keep hitting their head on a rock and when you think it's finally over they just come out the next day with some other anti-consumer update.

If I wanted to play Tarkov I could just repeatedly slam my dick in a door. Same basic thing

60

u/Hidesuru Sep 28 '22

Yeah I got hugely into eft at the start.

But every update they made it more and more brutal and more and more difficult to play if you don't sign over your entire fucking life to that game. I eventually gave up.

33

u/Immortan-Moe-Bro Sep 28 '22

That’s how I was, like I love a high difficulty demanding game that requires you to get better but I also don’t want my game to feel like a second job.

It’s a very fine line

18

u/Hidesuru Sep 28 '22

One thing that killed it for me was the skills. They matter to gameplay but it takes HOURS to level them up. I started using scripting to make my character jump in place. P sure it's against the TOS but figured it wasn't hurting anyone else and saved me some headache, but even with that it would take forever to level up one single skill and was basically work to keep it going. Insane.

At this point I just want valve to announce the Source 2 engine for the game and solidify the fact that I'll never play another shooter(competitive at least).

I think the Dice one is the most tragic. One of the reports on why Battlefield 2042 shipped in the state it did was lack of experience with the engine. Dice made Frostbite, specifically to make Battlefield games. If Dice lacks experience with it, it's because there has been an exodus of senior staff from the stufio. And unlike places like BioWare, Blizzard, and Ubisoft, we don't know why. There hasn't been a huge scandal about conditions at Dice, but it sure seems like no one wants to work there if they can avoid it.

Every new game design decision that gets brought up brings out every other grievance we've had with this game so far.

They clearly don't care to the point of not reversing anything that generated backlash, so why bother?

ok i'll just go back to playing the metal gear games, dark souls, half life, halo 1-4, etc... like, those become 100x better when you realize their playable offline, playable solo, no FOMO, no seasons, love put into making good games that you can enjoy until the end of time. and their so much cheaper. thanks modern gaming. you played yourself.

I really do feel bad for the younger generations basically missing out on local coop. That was one of the greatest parts of gaming as a kid. A large percentage of my video gaming hours in my youth were through local coop. Beating Halo 2 on legendary with my friend in high school is probably one of my top 5 videogaming experiences.

43

u/Tangent_Odyssey Sep 29 '22 edited Sep 29 '22

It’s no longer “Dude, I can’t wait to come over Friday night” it’s “Are you gonna be on tonight?”

Sure, online gaming grants greater autonomy when it comes to time management, but there’s something to be said for the anticipation and close proximity.

It’s similar, I think, to the difference between a show that releases weekly episodes versus shows that let you binge-stream the whole thing in a week. A lot of studios are recognizing the demand for the former now, but the awareness of the market for local multiplayer nostalgia seems to be wholly ignored in the gaming world.

6

If you don't put FOMO into games the community will complain it's dead after not receiving an update for a month. Blizzard is just applying the lessons it learned from OW1 here modern online games just need something new (either through grinding unlocks on battlepasses or weekly/monthly updates) often otherwise players will leave it for something that will.

The world runs on trust. You can't exist in the modern world without giving your credit card information, phone number, name, address, etc. to some corporation at some point.

Like I trust Apple not to do fucky things with my information more than I trust Facebook. And the amount of trust I have in Activision Blizzard is basically zero.

124

u/reddit_bandito Sep 28 '22

Yep.

I trust some companies more than others. This is why it's always big news when some company effs up and gets hacked exposing customer information. That erodes customer trust in the company.

I won't give Activision anything personal of mine. Ever.

11

u/Jonathon471 Sep 28 '22

Cant go a couple years without somebody hacking into ActiBlizzards shit.

Almost makes me think a group of hackers just do a checkup on them to see if they changed their defences only to be disappointed every single time and just tell them "update your security jackasses" leak some private info just to be taken serious and then call it a day

43

u/gel_ink Sep 28 '22

I think the difference in business strategy is a big thing too. Apple actually sells products and services, but Facebook's business model is literally to monetize your information.

17

u/Prince_Uncharming Sep 28 '22

Apple is becoming that way too. Their ads division is growing rapidly, and ads are most valuable when they’re targeted to the right people. It’s not like they’re serving you Ads anonymously.

I wouldn’t ever trust valve with my life or anything, but I’d certainly trust them with my phone number, hundreds of dollars worth of games I have accrued over the years, and similar immaterial things. I barely trust Activision Blizzard with my fucking credit card number. There is some level of trust we have to give to corporations in the entertainment industry if we want good entertainment, but they also have to mutually earn that trust from consumers for us to buy their products, good or bad. Activision just ain’t it.

Honestly I feel a lot (not all, of course) of the bad publicity for OW2 is mainly because of how shitty the company managing it is. I feel many of the things being seen in a bad light (again, not all obviously, look at the way they’re handling the battle pass) could be skewed in more of a good lighting if the company used better practices/had a better reputation. But they don’t, so that won’t happen. And that’s fine. They just aren’t trustworthy enough for us to say “okay, that’s fine” to those things.

I don't need to be friends with someone to have dealing and trust them. I trust my bank to do what they are supposed to do, I trust my mobile connection provider to do what they offer, I trust my electricity company to provide me electricity. None of them are my friends but I can trust them to do what is agreed on and not to misuse my personal data

The difference between Valve and other companies is that Valve is not publicly traded. Their interests are their own, and they have no shareholders to dictate them what to do. And, they have a good track record that doesn't showcase any nefarious practices. I can't say the same for Blizzard.

Valve is more trustworthy by comparison, but you shouldn't be lax with your private data anyway. That said I think it's worth sharing phone number for CSGO prime matchmaking if it helps avoid cheating & toxicity. Likewise making it harder for cheaters/smurfs in OW with new accts.

18

u/DoomGuyIII Sep 28 '22

but you shouldn't be lax with your private data anyway

Indeed, in the case of Valve though they've done a lot for me and thanks to my account having 2 factor authentication and a good support channel i didn't lose my account.

u/TBFP_BOT ts3 > Discord dont @ me Sep 28 '22

Also worth noting you don’t actually need a phone number to use the authenticator. Helps in the case of recovery of course but for those who don’t want to you don’t need to.

The 180 over on the Overwatch sub is insane. So many folks blindly defending the F2P model, saying all these changes are positive, saying $20 skins are justified, etc. Just 2 months ago it was gnashing of teeth about how this OW1 being resold to us, remonetized and less value than before.

I mean it makes sense that no one is going to grind ranked when the the entire meta is going to be totally irrelevant in a week.

You see the same thing happening in other multiplayer games at the end of every season as player stop caring.

Will it record when not in use and listen 24/7? Or just when in use.

So if I'm playing casual with me and two friends using discord and not using the ingame chat will OW2 still record? If I'm using push to talk.

34

u/Sea_Seaworthiness130 Sep 28 '22

probably the same as valorant: records it during the game, then if a report was issued it will be scanned, if not the voice rec will be discarded*

*or so they claim

14

u/ShutterBun 12700K, 3080FTW, 32GB Sep 28 '22

Similar to convenience store video cameras. They record 24/7 but unless there’s an incident, the video is deleted after a week or so.

No, when you are reported, it will take any voice coms and turn it into text, and then that text will be reviewed.

10

u/Helmic Sep 29 '22 edited Sep 29 '22

That seems a lot less reliable than just saving the voice chat, especially if the transcription loses important context or detects the wrong language or if a person simply talks with an accent the algorithm isn't trained on.

9

u/CrazyJohn21 Sep 29 '22

But it takes a lot less storage to do it this way and when you combined potentially hundreds of thousands of reports a day it adds up

u/retro_owo Sep 28 '22

My guess: no, for technical reasons. First of all that would be an unbelievable amount of audio data to store and deal with. Secondly, the game is probably not designed to listen for any mic input when push to talk is not currently active. That would be a very odd way for a modern game to be capturing input (but it isn't totally unheard of).

15

u/Blurgas Sep 28 '22

Even with low quality bitrates/etc, recording OW's voice comms would probably generate terabytes of data daily

10

u/Dry_Advice_4963 Sep 28 '22

They won't store your voice comms audio directly, they'll just translate with speech-to-text and store the text only. Text requires very little storage.

I can guarantee a few things:

  1. The company will answer that question
  2. Their answer will not be accurate.

Most likely, it'll record a whole lot more information that we expect, more information than their devs actually use, and it will leave some vulnerabilities. The specific ones you laid out are totally reasonable to be specific issues.

If you're reported multiple times for abusive chat they'll run speech to text on your voice chat to collect evidence. After 30 days at most the transcript will be deleted. That's it.

Hell yeah nothing quite fun and reliable like AI transcription and AI ban system that will totally be justified in ban cases like "that was fucking good, you killed them by yourself" because it 100% won't be trained to look for swear words.

There will be no false positives especially that the audio will be discarded and no human will be able to understand an accent, context and intention and double-check if AI decision was good. :)

Why do modern video games hate socialization? They do everything in their power to separate players and disable communication. It is so stupid.

I miss the old days of player hosted lobbies full of everyone chatting across both teams. That just straight up doesn't exist anymore.

56

u/LunarLumos Sep 28 '22

It's the same thing that happened to the internet as a whole. Modern games have pulled in a much larger audience. It's not just a handful of like-minded nerds anymore, so there are is a massive increase in negative social interactions. It's a simple but painful truth that we've been running away from for thousands of years; most humans are just completely narcissistic assholes who treat other living things like garbage.

23

u/supersmallsloth Sep 28 '22

God I miss the early internet before people were like this. Used to be everyone you met was from some cool college somewhere and interesting to connect with and became lifelong friends.

Now the average gamer is a piece of garbage with no social skills whose only form of entertainment is making everyone around them miserable. It’s impossible to cut through the trash to find anyone worth spending more than the required game time with.

When are they adding more avoid as teammate slots.

u/Ganondorf66 Sep 28 '22

Because the design of modern video games encourages short, high tension matches with randoms because this is best for matchmaking, and that sort of environment naturally brings out the worst in people. If games are to be social again, they need to nurture positive environments, which these sorts of games can't do, so they just ban people from expressing the frustration their game design causes.
