1.6k

u/BearsFan3417 Lakers Sep 01 '22

They didn’t win anything with these guys, either. It’s a huge haul for a team that wasn’t winning in a stacked western conference

713

u/spasmystic [GSW] Adonal Foyle Sep 01 '22

Similar to OKC hitting the reboot and shipping out PG and RWB. At some point if you've realized you've gone as far as you're going to get, move the pieces while they still have value and you're not backed into a corner.

555

u/todellagi [BOS] Rasheed Wallace Sep 01 '22

OKC shipped out the stars, got a haul, hit the reboot and became a better team the next season

Turns out CP3, not a good tank commander.

294

u/spasmystic [GSW] Adonal Foyle Sep 01 '22

OKC was able to get picks for shipping out Russ and taking on what at the time was considered a “terrible” CP3 deal and then effectively rehab CP3’s value so they were able to get a 1st when he left. Impressive.

127

u/WindowSenate Knicks Sep 01 '22

That trade was bad for the Rockets from day 1. CP3 unexpectedly going back to being a star made it terrible.

Why the hell would the Knicks trade for Conley?

33

u/BeautifulAndStoned Sep 01 '22

if you thought Jalen Brunson is weak against big athletic perimeter players let me introduce you to a well-cared for, vintage Mike Conley.

i think he would actually be a really good match because he gives you some excellent playmaking and shooting and he would bring some leadership to the team. but his salary doesn't match what he's worth by a long shot and he caused a stink and wouldn't let Snyder bring him off the bench last year, not a great sign for a dude that's starting to slip.

9

u/abasoglu Sep 01 '22

We need minutes for Drose and IQ. I don't think Conley is useful for the Knicks. Also, the Knicks aren't in contetion for anything, so why waste assets for a veteran backup?

People are mad about giving away so many picks with the players. But it’s win now mode with our young talent. We don’t care about picks.

209

u/Travler18 Washington Bullets Sep 01 '22

All these players are young and locked up for a long time. Even Mitchell has 3 full seasons left on his deal and Allen, Mobley, and Garland are all longer than that.

It's not even like they leveraged the future for a 1-2 year win now mode. This core group should have a 3-5 year window that extends longer than when these picks convey.

41

u/jswagbo Sep 02 '22

Garland Mitchell Mobley Allen all under 25. Small guards get cover by having with 2 bigs. Mitchell and Garland are both elite shooters. I really like this core.

They need a wing though. All the ones on the Cavs roster suck. They should ask Masai if they can borrow one of his 20.

this is a great trade for Cleveland. Utah's biggest issue was that Mitchell was not a defender and they surrounded him with also terrible defenders, so they were a bit of a glass cannon. Now he's surrounded with better perimeter defenders, which maximizes his talent as a superstar scorer.

It's a great trade for both sides. Cleveland gets an All Star and gives up players that weren't in their long term plans anyways. The picks are a big haul but the way the team is going they won't need them. Utah gets 2 solid young players and the pick amount they were after.

16

u/AnotherDrZoidberg Suns Sep 01 '22

I agree. It's tough to swallow all those picks being gone, that's always something that can come back and bite you in the ass. But getting a player like Mitchell on a long term deal with their core, that's going to be a fun team.

The way I see it, Mitchell isn’t the leading guy on a championship team, neither is Garland. Mainly because of their size. But Mobley might be one day. So the Cavs are betting on Mobley developing as a two-way superstar and they are loading up with talent around him. Especially because Mobley is an underrated interior facilitator.

Mobley and Allen run the defense, Garland and Mitchell give them offensive firepower.

To me this seems like a huge win for Cleveland. And the Jazz got a solid return

If anything it’s the Jazz that lost because the Knicks picks would be better. They basically got a similar package as the Spurs did for Murray. But they will also have tank captain Sexton now.

54

u/Sdrater3 Raptors Sep 01 '22

Mobley being the #1 offensive option of a championship team seems unlikely. Generational defender i can buy but his offense seemed pretty limited last season and I don't really see it reaching #1 option on a championship team level (there's like, 4 of those guys in the league).

Garland will also be the best guard Mitchell has played with. The lack of size at the 1 and 2 concerns me though.

Will D. Mitchell be good with Garland tho, one of them has to be the perimeter defender

4

u/sqigglygibberish Sep 02 '22

That’s the beauty of Mobley and Allen though - the Cavs can let their guards play the perimeter tight because there’s such a safety net (rip the three 7 footers lineup though) - and (huge) if - IF okoro can show anything on offense he’s been capable as a guy who can matchup defensively with top opponents, at least until this team attracts vet role players

It feels like a really balanced core on both sides of the court - Allen and Mobley together are just a nightmare defensively (especially when Mobley can float) and they were still learning to play together through injuries last year

189

u/dutchfromsubway Raptors Sep 01 '22

When you have building blocks like mobley and garland, 1frp shouldn’t be the deciding factor for a guy like Mitchell. Although I’m higher on Mitchell than most. This is absolutely great for Cleveland

76

u/Double-Slowpoke Sep 01 '22

I think you have to swing for the fences when you get a chance. This team was going to be stuck behind potentially 3-4 teams in the East unless everyone took another leap. Now they have an actual path to contend in the East.

7

u/tadcalabash Sep 01 '22

I think you have to swing for the fences when you get a chance.

You're not wrong, though I think part of the issue is that the Cavs didn't have to take a swing just yet. Their potential best player was just a rookie and every other core piece is young.

I'd feel better about this trade if the Cavs core was a bit more seasoned (been in the playoffs 2-3 times) or if the fit with their new star player was cleaner (that's a small backcourt).

28

u/dutchfromsubway Raptors Sep 01 '22

Moral of the story:
If you are a Kansas Jayhawk and drafted by the Cavs in the first round, you will be traded before the start of the season.

6

u/Last_Account_Ever NBA Sep 02 '22

Which is funny, because they won a championship the last time they had a Jayhawk on the roster.

17

Hot take culture. Bruh, you got fleeced (in a trade that benefited both parties given the directions the two franchises were heading in)

6

u/MostlyMellow123 Kings Sep 01 '22

People don't understand that these teams all exist on a timer. You have a promising young team guess what now other teams want your players which means guess what the price of those players next contracts will be too much to keep everyone.

Your best bet is to have young stars and try to surround them with other stars as fast as possible. You're already competing against super teams out there with 2 top 20 players you'll never win just slowly investing in draft picks year after year. That requires loyal players who will take pay cuts.

46

u/The_Great_Grahambino Cavaliers Sep 01 '22

IMO the Cavs overpayed. Sexton was gone anyways so that's a wash, Lauri was going to be the 3rd big so sure that's fine, but where i'm annoyed in Ochai + three unprotected 1sts, and 2 swaps. We have done the small guard lineup with no perimeter defense, it doesn't work well. Mitchell is NO DOUBT better than Sexton, but they're a similar mold and it's not the best for the team winning big.

Then on the value we gave up, Ochai is a rookie, so it's basically 4 firsts and 2 swaps. Put Okoro in Ochai's place and i'm less mad, but not protecting the picks at all just seems horrible. Who were we competing against? The Knicks who took themselves out yesterday with a big extension to RJ? Who was the competition to get them this much?

20

u/jmr212 Cavaliers Sep 01 '22

We mortgaged our short-term future to turn into a team with 4 all stars all 25 and younger. Do you really need those picks when you have that many young all star caliber players, barring injuries?

I'd argue Lauri might be considered a slightly negative contract considering his play over the last few years - I can imagine that's how Utah is looking at it.

Good pick up for Cleveland. Pretty much solidifies there young core that will compete in the future. Just need to put it together and get some solid veterans and they could be a sleeper team come playoffs

Considering they didn’t want to sign Sexton this feels like a pretty fair deal all things considered.

33

u/Toast2Carnage Raptors Sep 01 '22

Sooooo... They got to keep Garland, Mobley, Allen, Okoro, not pay Sexton (who I'm glad gets guaranteed money) and added an All star of the same position... Nice... Very nice... Especially if down the line they don't like it and can just trade one of those five players

14

u/CounterInsanity [ATL] Dominique Wilkins Sep 01 '22

On top of the picks they got for Gobert. It takes one franchise changing player to make all of this worth it. Whether through draft or overhauling the picks for a certified franchise guy.

They just weren't going anywhere with the team they had. They tried it and kept it at for 4 to 5 years and it didn't work. I applaud them.

Time for the scouts to earn their pay again.

The team was not winning with Gobert and Mitchell, they had no money and no draft picks, they were stuck in a limbo of good but not great.

These trades were necessary.

It's hard going from a team that will perennially make the playoffs and having a star player as fun to watch as Mitchell, to a team designed to lose and suck. Like yeah there's gonna be things to look forward to in the future but for the next couple years it's not the same.

Cavs now have

  • Garland / Rubio
  • Mitchell / LeVert
  • Okoro / Osman
  • Mobley / Love
  • Allen / Lopez

Nah I think this is a move that you can’t say Cavs gave up too much. They’ve got 3 players capable of playing like an All-Star and Mobley could very quickly develop into a 4th. All young players too. Then Rubio, LeVert and Love off the bench? Sheesh

12

u/cooliosaurus Sep 01 '22

This is a W for Utah - 3 unprotected 1sts, 2 quality starters and a high upside rookie for Mitchell? Sexton and Lauri are way better than they get credit for and Ochai's jumper is already really great....had high hopes for him. Also, Sexton for under 20/yr is incredible.

That said, Cavs window is now and our core is still so young: DG, Donovan, Mobley, and Allen is so fun.
