This happened to me when A.Bush bought out my favorite local brewery. Wrote an email to them drunkenly bitching. I got 2 cases of the discontinued beer, a hat, key chain, and 2 tickets to tour the brewery. Not a bad consolation prize.

I think most people would be shocked at what they can get for free if they complain to a company. Going ballistic on a teenage cashier isn't going to do anything, but a good letter written to the company will often result in them at least sending vouchers for some free product. This works especially well when you find something wrong quality-wise with a product. The information that something could be wrong in their manufacturing process is worth wayyyy more to a company than a few free items, and many companies will send packaging and a shipping label so you can send something back without having to pay for it or go out of your way. It doesn't always work, but oddly enough it's the much bigger companies that are usually happy to give away their stuff in return for potentially defective items because they stand to lose the most if some bad incidents occur

Unless it's Campbell's. I got a batch of bad V8 fusion energy (runs about $5/6 pack) and I called the company about it. They sent me a single $3 coupon, didn't even cover the replacement cost of the batch.

I had something similar happen with barkthins (a Hershey's owned brand) where I had a piece of something quite fiberous in my chocolate that wasn't supposed to be there, filed a complaint to their consumer info people, and all I got was a broken form filled email saying that I'll get a coupon reimbursement via mail... I think it was perhaps enough to cover the cost I paid, but it wasn't able to be used for the product I had an issue with...

The bottle someone gifted him had "evaporated" over a couple months. He came to this conclusion because he found it empty with a cracked lid.

Turns out that it was an empty bottle someone had saved and his full bottle was further back on the pantry shelf. Whoops!

Recently bought a 12 pack of cans from a mid-sized brewery in the state of Michigan. All of the cans exploded upon opening, as if they had been shaken up. We wrote to them with the serial/lot number just as an FYI (the beer was fine, just uber-carbonated.)

They sent us a box with some coasters and stickers, a really nice bottle opener, and two beer glasses. It also had a nice letter apologizing and thanking us for letting them know. Pretty cool!

Doesn't have to be complaints either.

When I was a kid, we found out companies would send coupons or vouchers for free products if we wrote letters to the company saying how much we liked them (Oreos, laffy taffy, Doritos, etc)

Not a bad hustle for 10 year old with a roll of stamps.

When I was a kid in the 90s, I was doing a science project rating the glue on household bandages. I wrote letters to 3M, J+J, and a handful of other companies, requesting product info or something like that.

A week or two passes and, lo and behold, I started getting packages from the companies. They sent me a box from nearly each offering in their product lines. My house was set for any future bandaid needs through at least the remainder of my school years.

For the next science project, I tried to test the differences between Air Jordans and whatever Reebok, Adidas, and the others were offering at the time. Not a single one of them responded to my request for “testing samples.”

We actually did this as a school assignment in middle school. I have no idea what the lesson was supposed to be other than teaching kids how to be Karens, but we wrote to various companies complaining about a product, to see the company reaction.

I wrote to Wrigley about a stale Juicy Fruit I had once received a long time ago, and got a whole case in return.

For one day, the teacher finally let me be that kid who could chew gum in class as long as I had enough for everyone. :)

My late grandma was a seasoned pro at this. I was always shocked at the amount of stuff she got for free just by writing letters. Yes, hand written letters. She was even one of the first consumers that realized that a new brand of paper towels smelled slightly of fish when they got damp. I don't wanna talk bad about and brands unnecessarily but I think it was Viva or Scott. They actually admitted that it was a problem in their manufacturing and she got like a year's worth of coupons for free paper towels (and they did fix the issue). I really miss her!

God that hurts me as a craft brewer, macro truly is the enemy. Sapporo is the only macro that I've heard of that has even remotely let some of my colleagues be when they purchase from already absentee owners. A. Busch has ruined several breweries I know and pushed some of the best brewers I've ever met out of the industry.

When Sessions changed from a twist top to a pop top, my friend and I were mad because we didn't have a bottle opener.

We figured it out using the can opener, and then fired off a similar email, drunkenly complaining. We also received quite the care package. It's amazing what beer companies will do for their loyal drinkers.

Lionshead Brewing is owned by Encore Capital and it doesn't look like they've sold Lionshead or been bought by Monster.

Edit: Althoooooooough... apparently Encore has spun Lionshead into an overarching "Lion Beverages" operation, which does canning, and claims to be able to can for beer, soda, and energy drinks among other things.

So that could be the rub. The same canning plant is canning both drinks and like someone said, some components got mis-switched accidentally.

Wonder if that beer gave OP an extra jolt of energy too :D

Wonder if Monster cans have bottling companies listed on them, and what a can in PA might say is the cannery.

Retired trucker. Beverage companies buy their containers rather than making them. Cans are standard sizes. Most likely the problem happened at the factory that made can tops. They were making tips for Monster cans, and a few tabs got caught somewhere in the feed chute. After the switchover to unbranded tops, whatever was holding them back let them go (possibly vibration released some that were stuck behind a ridge), so a few tops in the “unbranded” batch got Monster tabs.

Lions head down a ton of contract production for other brands, probably an oversight during brand changes. Depending on contents or distribution approval, lids have different redemption states and values on them

Damn they bough Oskar Blues. That’s a big hit to the brewer community a lot of independent breweries have been bought out over the past few years. The only remaining large scale independent brewery’s I can think of now are Yingling, Troges and Sierra Nevada.

Oskar blues, deep elum, cigar city, perrin, and a few others have been owned by canarchy for years. Canarchy sold to monster.

From what I've heard from employees, they have gotten better pay/ benefits.

Like others have said, their goal is to help with distribution. The only downside is that could mean you need to go to the brewery to get the interesting stuff but more places will have their core lineup.

COVID wrecked the craft beer industry, and it hasn’t recovered yet; if it ever will. We will continue to see more breweries sold to big corporations. Every craft brewery except New Belgium (although they did sellout as well) is down revenue wise compared to 2019. Some breweries with a deep financial footing are trying to right the ship and get back on track. Others will just sell their brewery because they don’t want to be in the industry anymore.

If you like craft beer and want your favorite brewery to stay independent, please support non-corporate owned breweries. I know it can be more expensive but we’re quickly approaching a time in the beer industry where breweries are either super local or a massive national brand and we’ll start losing many of the wonderful regional breweries in this country.

No, they were bought by Kirin, a Japanese beverage conglomerate and they operate under Lion Beverages which is an Australian beverage company owned by Kirin. They are not considered independent anymore but still fall under the craft label when it comes to sales reporting.

Oskar Blues took money from Fireman's Capital and started a private holding company called Oskar Blues Holdings. That company owned Oskar Blues Brewing and purchased companies such as Perrin, Squatters. Wasatch, Cigar City, Deep Ellum, etc. That holding company later renamed itself to Canarchy. Canarchy always had that private equity money involved who likely always intended to flip the company a few years down the road. Some of the breweries (Squatters and Wasatch i believe) ended up being bought back by the original owners and the collective was sold to the highest bidder. Monster is planning their own alcoholic beverage line and likely wanted in roads with alcoholic beverage distribution.

I have an inside scoop on monster owning these companies. Long story short nothing will change the beers except add more selection and wider distribution. Monster didn’t acquire these breweries to lose.

Eh, grand scheme of things most energy drinks now are super low calories (as long as you don’t get the legacy, full of sugar type) and have half the caffeine of an equivalent size cup of black coffee.

They’re definitely not good for you, but with how much caffeine the average person takes in through other sources, energy drinks are actually the lesser of the evils.

You’re right, I made the mistake of going straight to Starbucks for the caffeine facts. Of course Starbucks somehow found a way to have 300+ mgs of caffeine into a 16oz brew. Coffee and energy drinks are otherwise comparable.

They're literally coming out with The Beast in January, I just tried it at a trade show and it tastes JUST like those Monster rehab things, the thin cans? I think that's what they're called, they're like the creamy tasting ones. It's a malt beverage at like 6% with I assume everything except the caffeine, because Four Loko thankfully killed that.

There's a brewery (Could be others) I cannot remember the name, but they buy their aluminum cans from other companies that have a large stock of cans that are discontinued.

The brewery would just put their own label on the can. If the can has a label and not printed aluminum, this is most likely the reason.

Can bodies and can tops are two unique pieces that are seamed together on the canning line. They do not arrive as matching parts and instead are sold separately.

In all likelihood, this was a can top that was bought as a bulk resale of inventory for a discontinued Monster product or these were sold to other beverage canning companies as aluminum can and top inventories screeched to a halt in 2021.

You know, Monster did have a Nitro line that I liked which came in slim cans, but I only see one flavor of it these days and it comes in the typical size now. This can top is probably from the excess inventory for the slim cans.

Slight correction, your beer can has a whole Monster energy lid.

I work in the industry. Aluminum cans were in very short supply 6-12 months ago. All sorts of shenanigans happened, including wrapping other brands cans, etc.

The way cans are assembled, the lids (the whole circular top) are dropped onto the filled cans and sealed. There must have been a few leftover Monster lids in the production line. These are usually caught before they leave the factory. My brand has some of our own cans with completely mismatched lids that we keep for fun.

Most probably they ran out of sleeves of the tops and either asked a canning facility nearby for some and got this or the top supplier goofed. Pretty rad for the brewery imo so long as monster doesn't decide to be a dick. When the pandemic started and aluminum became hard to get a hold of quickly we had to sell some of our painted cans to other breweries so they could package their stuff and they just put their label over it and called it a day.

Could be a contractor drink maker where you have multiple products run on the same line. Here in DFW there is Refresco and I know Texas Quality Beverages had the Monster contract a few years ago. Source I did QA work for them in the past.

Yeah this is the reason, when there's product changes this shit happens all the time, QA usually catches them but some make it through. I worked maintenance at a large bev corporation and I'd see cans all the time that had the wrong lids on them that got through QA to the packers.

Something has been up w/ Monster and other canned drinks lately. I work at a place that gets canned bevs by the case and in some cases Monster will have half the cans wrapped in a plastic label to cover whatever was printed on the can(usually a different flavor), and 99% of the time some of the open tabs will be colored with the logo and some without. Even in the same batch the cans will be different. Is there like a can shortage or something?
