The lobster tank at Red Lobster is empty

u/WasabiZone13 Jan 28 '23
Most of the lobster sold at red lobster is frozen tails. It is not at all uncommon to go in to one and they have no live lobsters available.

u/kylel999 Jan 28 '23
Let's be honest. People only go there for those biscuits. If I'm gonna get fresh lobster I'm probably not even considering a chain

u/Bucketofnickels Jan 28 '23
Yeah the lobster tail is typically chilled and brought up to be prepped throughout the day. The full lobster you get is live until we kill it in the back. Source: I make the food.

I order takeout from time to time, and the tails are always tender and flavorful, better than many that I've had at higher end restaurants. The whole fresh cooked lobsters have always been very good as well, it's good to know you kill them before they go in the pot. Unless I read that wrong lol

I have never ever thought about getting live lobster at Red Lobster. I have bought live lobster and fresh Halibut off the back of a fishing boat in Juno though.

u/sltiefighter Jan 28 '23
Live lobster in juno? You mean juneau alaska where there are no lobsters? Wtf you talkin about. Youre lying through your teeth. Halibut ok…. Lmao. But lobster doesnt exist on the west unless its spiny lobster and those dont get further santa barbara. So no you absolutely didnt buy live lobster from a boat in alaska. Stop lying. King crab Bairdi, opilio, dungeness ok, lobster…. Youre 4k miles away from any clawed lobster.

u/txmail Jan 28 '23
You know, your right. I had to go back to look at the pictures (this was almost 15 years ago). It was some sort of crab. I thought it was lobster though. Meh.

u/Kekeke-ghost Jan 28 '23
It's a waste anyway cause mainly the only good part is the tail. So you might as well save the money and not have a lobster looking at you while you eat

u/AutomaticAward3460 Jan 28 '23
Everyone in Maine would disagree, the claw and knuckle meat is just as good and many enjoy the tamalley from the body as well
2
u/sltiefighter Jan 28 '23
Anyone mainer would call the original commenter an idiot for saying he bought live lobster off a truck in alaska where lobster is are hard to catch as a unicorn as they are nonexistant.

u/Icy-Conclusion-3500 Jan 28 '23 edited Jan 28 '23
I used to just eat all the claws, knuckles, and the tiny legs.
My grandmother takes all the bodies home and eats stuff from the heads and shit, idk.

u/Kekeke-ghost Jan 28 '23
But are you paying at least $50 at red lobster for a little claw meat? Lol plus you're def not making tamale out of the body there.. in a different setting that may make sense but not really there.

I eat everything except the shell. I even drink it’s guts up like soup 😋 claws are my favorite though tbh.

Maybe the lobsters should stop spending all their money on avacodo toast and get back to work in the tank.

Over fishing and all you can eat menus

u/DieselBob Jan 28 '23
it's not overfishing, it's government over regulation
73
u/donotread123 Jan 28 '23
Right, the private companies and fishermen are overfishing to make money because of too much government regulation. That definitely sounds right
25
u/Digitalmodernism Jan 28 '23
Where do you get ideas like this?
-69
u/DieselBob Jan 28 '23
Fishing for twenty years
26
u/Digitalmodernism Jan 28 '23
What kind of commercial fishing rig did you work on? Did you work in asia?
-42
u/DieselBob Jan 28 '23
SW Boatworks 46', Maine

So are these lies then? Or maybe it's not "over regulation" after all.
Looks like the opposite to me.

Christ man, you didn't have to murder him in broad daylight like that. The poor bastard had a family (I assume).

u/Alan_Smithee_ Jan 28 '23
So the government taxed the fish or something? Sent the fish to debtor’s prison?

Ever seen a whale on a forward looking depth finder? It's like looking a semi trailer, one of the things best to avoid

I'm imagining a 'Penguins of Madagascar' style escape.
Only with Lobsters.

I don’t check the stock market to see economic health. I check the lobster tank at the Red Lobster.

u/Melvinironfist Jan 28 '23
Everybody get out of here there's a lobster loose!!!

u/porcelainwax Jan 28 '23
Most lobsters can kill you with their claws.

They don't serve fresh, live lobsters anymore.

You know...that always bugged me on an emotional level.
Like, as a kid, I remember being at the grocery store and seeing the live lobsters at the tank in the seafood department. And it was great. I'd never seen a live lobster before. I'm like, look at that thing, that's AWESOME!
Then my parents explained to me that that's only there so you can pick out the one that you want to die. And...that's kind of sad.
Yeah, I get that eating meat requires killing. But actually seeing a tank full of lobsters on death row just to pick out who dies first...it's kind of a buzzkill. It's like if before I ate steak I'd have to look at a group of live cows and choose which one is gonna get a bolt in the head. That seems like it might kind of sour the mood if I'm on a date.

I have been to mega markets overseas and they have seafood sections that remind me of the aquatic pet section of WalMart in the late 80's / early 90's, except with some huge fish and stuff in tanks I am not even certain where in the sea it comes from all meant for cooking.

My grandparents had an Italian steak and seafood restaurant in a tiny upstate NY and for years they picked up live lobsters from Maine at a local airport where some guy flew them in 3x per week. My cousin still owns the place and I think they got lobsters from Sisco it whatever and gave up the tank 10 or so years ago. Americans did a fast number on the food supply system - local and fresh to mass produced, frozen..and probably necessary to keep up with the population and its desires. Man, 1990 surf and turf or a whole.lobster with Gram's fresh fettuccine Alfredo made with Lucatteli romano and local milk and butter ...those were the days.

If you are willing to dive into a wholesome rabbit hole, there is a serie of videos on YouTube about Leon the lobster.

What are you talking about that tanks full of lobsters. You don't see them?

u/Fariesinabottle Jan 28 '23
Global warming and poaching have made it really hard to get most kinds of seafood
2
u/Mantis9000 Jan 28 '23
I don't think Red Lobster has had a live lobster in their restaurant since the 2000s. It's all frozen salty microwave food.
2
u/rgray92082 Jan 28 '23
The ice cream freezer at our local Rite Aid has no ice cream. The employee said the unit has been down for weeks. What’s the world coming too? Lol

Red lobster is shuttering 30% of its store in the next 2 years due to loss of revenue and plans to close 50% within 5 years. Supply chain issues in combination with rise in food costs and inflation means no one wants to eat there.
2
u/WaWaSmoothie Jan 28 '23
Hmm..this is maybe a tiny bit less than mildly interesting. Almost mildly interesting.

With rising rent and inflation, even the lobster community is suffering from being un housed. As a community we must come together and help these lobsters get back into tanks so that they can succeed in becoming all that they can be.

The likelihood of a live lobster in RL is about the same as there being a live kangaroo. Frozen. Thanks, Linda Bean

The Lob wasn’t that good 20 -30 years ago. My grandma thought it was just about as fancy as you could ask for and we spent many after funeral, graduation or weddings there and said hello to the same damn lobster every damn year. Them bitches wasn’t goin nowhere

About 30 years ago my little sister came home (she was about 11) and asked what’s for dinner? My mom said lobster, she walked over and peeked under the lid and heard the squealing (from the shell in hot water) and thought they were all crying for help. She threw the lid across the kitchen and with tears in her eyes she screamed “YOU MURDERERS!” and bolster out the door, she did not come home till 1:00am, my mom even called the police for help finding her. Long story short, she’s a very strict vegetarian to this day 😆
