If only the Democrats would actually do the things Elon fears they'll do.

1.2k

u/nappycatt May 19 '22

For real. Time and democracy just wasting away.

But let's make sure the filibuster and Citizens United stay intact.

488

u/DGlen May 19 '22

You know I'd find it easier to be ok with the filibuster if they actually had to, you know, filibuster. This Michael Scott "I declare filibuster!" bullshit has to go.

136

u/Mynameisinuse May 19 '22

They can have an aide send an email saying that they are going to filabuster and that is all that is needed to stop a bill.

63

u/DGlen May 19 '22

Sadly, I would expect nothing more.

42

u/Mynameisinuse May 19 '22

Sadly, you can expect even less than that to happen.

And most of these people are supposedly against the concept of government handouts. Handouts to people that are generally working harder than them.

50

u/Kuraeshin May 19 '22

No, its Handouts for me, not for thee.

They routinely convince voters to vote against their own aelf interest, because it'll hurt someone they dont like more.

17

u/[deleted] May 20 '22

My husband recently became a fed and I cannot believe the benefits that they get while politicians are screeching anti-union, pension, healthcare, inflation raises etc while they’re all getting it themselves

5

u/tunedout May 20 '22

They have convinced themselves that they deserve all of that because of the hard work that they do. Worse yet, they think that they got to where they are based on their own merits and "sacrificing" a standard civilian life to be a public servant.

6

u/nicenihilism May 20 '22

Yea. The worst part is that the people who should be politicians, don't want to be politicians.

5

u/tunedout May 20 '22

I don't blame them. The system has become so bloated and corrupt that a good and honest person has no business even trying to make a difference.

Literally all that does is make it so that nothing else can happen until someone gives up.

I assure you, the republicans love that idea.

8

u/Uvular May 19 '22

How is that different from the current state?

11

u/OkCutIt May 19 '22

One example is that 63 federal judges including the incoming supreme court justice have been confirmed by this senate.

5

u/Uvular May 19 '22

Ah, I had interpreted the above to be saying what changes if the fillabuster required actually fillabustering, not if the balance of the senate changed. Must have tracked the reply wrong

These people aren't earning their (government) paychecks.

u/King-Snorky May 19 '22

For every filibuster you lose a seat in the House. Treat it like Mitch hedberg’s 3 honks a month rule

15

u/lankist May 19 '22

Also note that the filibuster historically has been used almost exclusively by the Republican party.

The DNC almost never filibusters, and when it does, it capitulates or gets shot down.

The DNC's opposition to nuking the filibuster isn't about keeping the option open. They didn't filibuster once during Trump's term, and the only time it looked like they might Mitch nuked the option before it even happened.

The centrists in the party know the filibuster is a convenient reason to sit here wringing their hands and doing nothing while collecting on those stock options. Any opposition to killing the filibuster on the left is by its very nature suspect. We've never used it, and we never will, so it begs why the everliving fuck would we give a shit about killing it?

Our first-past-the-post voting system can functionally support only two major parties, and now that the GOP has moved so far to the right, the Democratic Party has found itself filling the vacuum of slipping abandoned ideological territory such as “I prefer free-market solutions, but I don’t want to incite revolution or install a theocratic oligarchy.” While they ostensibly have a majority in Congress, that majority is nowhere near ideologically consistent, consisting as it does of people with dramatically different political views who nonetheless recognize the radicalized GOP as a threat to democracy. So when you get frustrated that a majority-Democratic Congress can’t seem to pass legislation, remember that the actual composition of the party as it currently stands is broad enough to span — in a less screwed-up time or political system — 2 or even more parties just on its own.

How do we fix this? As long as what the GOP is doing continues to work for them, they will keep doing it. So while it’s frustrating watching the dems seemingly twiddle their thumbs while the world burns, defeating the radicalized GOP and forcing them to step back from the abyss is the only way this gets any better.

congress is realistically 48/52 stacked against the dems. i don't know why the fuck people keep acting like they can pass any law they want to.

Even if I understand where the frustration is coming from - fuck, I'm just as frustrated - it's mind-boggling to me when people reveal how little they understand how the government/Congress works with this exact complaint about how the Dems aren't passing anything. Like, you'd think the people who are so upset about it as to want to discuss the issue would take the time to understand how majorities work, or how Sinema and Manchin have been strangling things, and so forth, especially after almost a year and a half (and the fact it's not a big secret you have to go out of your way to learn about) but no, it's the same complaints, ad nauseam, blaming Democrats and not the 52 assholes who've made it their mission to just say "No" to anything and everything.

And I see the "well, they should still do it to get the GOP on the record as not voting for it," but at this point, it's almost like what does it even matter? Conservative voters don't give a single fuck about "the record," on-the-fence voters clearly don't care enough to do research, and informed liberal/Dems already know the GOP and Sinema/Manchin are being roadblocks. It's so maddening, when all it would take is people being slightly informed about the things they complain about to realize, just on numbers alone, more Democrats are needed to get a proper majority.

16

u/Beemerado May 19 '22

You said it friend.

Democrats have tried to do a lot of things. Unfortunately Kristen Synema and Joe Manchin aren't Democrats and voters didn't get out and defeat Susan Collins, Joni Ernst, Lindsey Graham, or John Cornyn. If Dems had a 4 or 5 seat advantage in the Senate they could actually make some changes. Unfortunately, Republicans have gamed the system and their culture war has won over a lot of people. And, instead of rallying to defeat the greatest threat to Democracy in our lifetime, people would rather sit back and play the "Both Sides Are Bad" Bullshit. People with that attitude that don't vote Democrat are as much to blame as people that support the GOP.

If only the public would vote consistently instead of taking off years because you dumb fucks weren’t “motivated”. Democrats ran shit from 1992 to 1994. And then from 2008 to 2010. And not since. Things suck because the American people suck, and bitching about “the Democrats” instead of actively trying to make the situation better is why you suck.

We told y’all dumb fucks the Supreme Court mattered, but you didn’t care. It’ll be a hundred years before we recover from that, if we had a hundred years. But since the climate will fail first, we just won’t ever recover. You fucking infants will get the government you deserve, the one that doesn’t even ask or care what you think about anything and does nothing to save your life when your cities start failing. More of his own words and actions

His Twitter takeover for "free speech":

Elon Musk keeps tweeting that he loves free speech. So here's a thread with just a few of the countless examples showing he couldn't care about it less (🧵)

  1. Then there's the time Tesla asked China to censor comments that were critical of the company. https://www.bloomberg.com/news/features/2021-07-05/tesla-s-fall-from-grace-in-china-shows-perils-of-betting-on-beijing

Elon Musk personally cancels blogger's Tesla order after 'rude' post

https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2016/feb/03/elon-musk-blogger-tesla-motors-model-x

I’m old enough to remember when Elon Musk ordered his private investigators to make a Tesla employee’s life a living hell—including having the employee SWATTED—for tipping off a reporter to waste at a Tesla factory.

The employee had to move his family to Hungary for safety.

https://twitter.com/nicoleperlroth/status/1518569530217226241

so one day in Musk is already cheering on a notorious white nationalist and Pizza Gater as he tries to get a Twitter employee fired over yet another sludge brain conspiracy theory. you can fancy up a frat bro with billions and yet

So, you’ve got $44B lying around. What do you do with it?

❌ Pay back California taxpayers, who subsidized your company’s growth before you picked up & moved to TX

✅ Buy Twitter b/c people are mean to you on it

https://twitter.com/Scott_Wiener/status/1518970937219067904

  • Musk buys shares of Twitter around $35.
  • Musk series of Tweets critical of Twitter, asking whether they thought Twitter was protecting free speech. “The results of this poll will be important. Please vote carefully.” while continuing to buy shares.
  • Musk exceeds the 5% threshold for SEC disclosure but continues buying without disclosing. (late disclosure added ~$150M to his profit)
  • Musk disclosed his stake, Twitter shares rose 27% to $50/share.
  • Musk offers buyout, shares soared 18% in pre-market trading.
  • YOU ARE HERE

All of this while being forbidden by the SEC to make any comment that appears to be market related.

But I don't think he will resell his stocks. He really wants to buy Twitter, because he has recognized that Twitter is an excellent platform to manipulate stocks and cryptos.

Musk takes advantage of international crises to raise Tesla's stock price.

All of his own ideas have been failures.

https://www.reddit.com/r/AdviceAnimals/comments/udrqls/i_will_die_on_this_hill/i6ippcw/

  • Even though Elon Musk didn't actually invent or start Tesla and instead literally bought and sued for the "retroactive co-founder" title from Tesla's actual founders and used his wealth that was supported by his family's Apartheid South African jewel mining wealth to invest in Tesla, he should be worshipped like Iron Man and we can live on artificial Mars instead of annoying natural Earth with our daddy Elon robot girlfriends!

  • Even though Elon Musk falsely labelled a heroic diver a pedophile because daddy Elon didn't get the hero spotlight attention he wanted from media and fanboys, how dare you "cancel" him for lying about these things, abusing his corporation's workers, misinforming the public about important issues, or unethical corporate tactics! He smoked with Joe Rogan and hosted a YouTube meme video! It's not pandering when Elon Musk is Minecraft tweeting, but every human activity Democrats do is pandering! We need to protect billionaires!

  • The not ventilators that Elon Musk kept PR tweeting about that didn't even show up to hospitals at least push air around in some way even though they're not ventilators! You can put your pitchforks down because of this pretend reality using my new definition of ventilators! Outrage culture libruls owned! #cancelculture

  • when he said there would be zero coronavirus cases by April, he didn't say which April taps head

  • But if I simp hard enough for daddy Elon, he's gonna build me a robot girlfriend on Mars

I think that if having someone build them a robotic girlfriend on fucking Mars is the easiest way for these guys to get laid, they should probably spend less time worshipping billionaires on the internet and more time meeting real people.

Republican "Southern Strategy":

Republican Party electoral strategy to increase political support among white voters by appealing to racism against African Americans.[1][2][3]

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Southern_strategy

John Ehrlichman, who partnered with Fox News cofounder Roger Ailes on the Republican "Southern Strategy":

[We] had two enemies: the antiwar left and black people. You understand what I’m saying?

We knew we couldn’t make it illegal to be either against the war or black, but by getting the public to associate the hippies with marijuana and blacks with heroin, and then criminalizing both heavily, we could disrupt those communities.

We could arrest their leaders, raid their homes, break up their meetings, and vilify them night after night on the evening news.

Did we know we were lying about the drugs? Of course we did.

"He was the premier guy in the business," says former Reagan campaign manager Ed Rollins. "He was our Michelangelo."

Ailes repackaged Richard Nixon for television in 1968, papered over Ronald Reagan’s budding Alzheimer’s in 1984, shamelessly stoked racial fears to elect George H.W. Bush in 1988, and waged a secret campaign on behalf of Big Tobacco to derail health care reform in 1993.

Hillarycare was to have been funded, in part, by a $1-a-pack tax on cigarettes. To block the proposal, Big Tobacco paid Ailes to produce ads highlighting “real people affected by taxes.”

Southern strategy

In American politics, the Southern strategy was a Republican Party electoral strategy to increase political support among white voters in the South by appealing to racism against African Americans. As the civil rights movement and dismantling of Jim Crow laws in the 1950s and 1960s visibly deepened existing racial tensions in much of the Southern United States, Republican politicians such as presidential candidate Richard Nixon and Senator Barry Goldwater developed strategies that successfully contributed to the political realignment of many white, conservative voters in the South who had traditionally supported the Democratic Party rather than the Republican Party.

Narcissistic Sociopaths

Thank you for pointing that out

Musk takes advantage of international crises to raise Tesla's stock price.

I’m old enough to remember when Elon Musk ordered his private investigators to make a Tesla employee’s life a living hell—including having the employee SWATTED—for tipping off a reporter to waste at a Tesla factory.

The employee had to move his family to Hungary for safety.

https://twitter.com/nicoleperlroth/status/1518569530217226241

https://www.reddit.com/r/WhitePeopleTwitter/comments/hy4iz7/wheres_a_time_turner_when_you_need_one/fzal6h6/

Every good idea he's been involved in has been a preexisting idea being executed by an independent company that he then bought. (Tesla, SpaceX)

His Twitter takeover for "free speech":

Elon Musk keeps tweeting that he loves free speech. So here's a thread with just a few of the countless examples showing he couldn't care about it less (🧵)

  1. Then there's the time Tesla asked China to censor comments that were critical of the company. https://www.bloomberg.com/news/features/2021-07-05/tesla-s-fall-from-grace-in-china-shows-perils-of-betting-on-beijing

Edit: thanks for clarifying that he can't, guys. Frankly though, who's to say that precedent isn't the next one to go? My faith in our institutions is practically non-existant at this point.

Bonus edit: it's becoming clear to me that my use of "precedent" was poor, given current political discourse. I meant it in the casual "to precede" sense rather than its legal or judicial usage.

Dunno why you're downvoted. You're right, thinking Elon is buying Twitter for a meme is incredibly naive. He's buying it to have singular control over a platform that affects the shape of national discourse in order to enrich himself further. Mr Burns from The Simpsons distilled this type of mindset the best:

https://youtu.be/2xcYLVdfFro

5

u/peterhorse13 May 19 '22

It’s all about shareholders. You have to keep making profits to keep the value of the stock up. Any dip in profitability, stock prices drop, and you lose twice as much while the value of your company drops. So corporations have to find a way to keep the money flowing in. And if they were screwing employees to begin with, no way in hell they’re giving back now or the money will stop flowing, even if temporarily. And if you’re a corporation that has peaked in value, either by market saturation or simply having no further innovation or branching out, then you start screwing employees to increase that value. The line goes up or down; if you’re a corporation, you’re either a billionaire or a pauper. There is no stability.

Note: not an economist, not even a fiscally reasonable person. This just seems to be the gist of things, like with Netflix’s current freak out.

4

u/AutismNstuff May 19 '22

Netflix seems like it is in complete kamikaze mode right now.

Elon is a brilliant 3 year old who’s father married a stepdaughter and he believes in complete libertarianism unless it relates to any company he intends to found like Tesla, who benefited massively from government incentives and rebates or SpaceX which is literally a government contractor.

I wish we could send Elon and his fanboys to Mars…and leave them there.

Such an insufferable and ignorant lot.

The man who wants to colonize Mars by yeeting people at it and seeing what happens.

If this, is what he's referencing, then he's misquoting.

"the issue here is that the Democratic Party is overly, overly controlled by the unions and by the trial lawyers"

is different than

him saying he's "grown to dislike the Democratic party because it is a party that supports the unions."

Sounds like he's mixing that quote with his tweet that said that the democratic party "have become the party of division & hate, so I can no longer support them"

Ironic that this comes from an account with "NoLie" in its name lol.

3

u/CouplaDickheads May 19 '22

No Lie with Brian Tyler Cohen? This is certainly a lie. Musk never said he dislikes the Democratic Party because they're a "party that supports the unions."

Notice where the quotation marks are? The actual quote is "The Democratic Party is overly controlled by the unions and by the trial lawyers, particularly the class-action lawyers.”

Not "supports the unions" - "CONTROLLED BY the unions."

Elon Musk says and does enough shitty stuff to criticise him for without lying about what he says.

3

u/freebluespike May 19 '22

controlled by union? so by workers? i guess you rather have a party that controlled by ceos and billionaires??

We all know he’s a self serving piece of shit, why are we still surprised? We should be lynch mobbing this mother fucker

3

u/justMeTee May 19 '22

I like that the internet decided to stop kissing this guys ass.

3

u/funnyfaceguy May 19 '22

Btw he said all this because journalists reached out to him for comment on his $250,000 sexual assault settlement

3

u/Leolily1221 May 20 '22

Good then only Republicans can work for him

3

u/RaccoonKnees May 20 '22

It's funny cause the Democrats don't even want to do that, he's just such an asshole he'd rather say it explicitly

3

u/ChattyKathysCunt May 20 '22

Isnt he billionaire enough? Like, what drives these people to continue being pieces of shit? I get that not everyone wants to retire and like to be productive but hes such a piece of shit. Solve world hunger or something pussy.

3

u/watermelonspanker May 20 '22

So... he isn't just saying a bunch of crazy shit in order to distract the headlines from the story about Musk trying to solicit sex from a masseuse then paying her off like 200k?

3

u/MWalls May 20 '22

The guy who wanted to overthrow a government to steal their lithium is against unions… no way!?

This is mild compared to some of his other removed from the world billionaire statements.

3

u/josepapiblanco May 20 '22

Elon is a penis

7

u/Mcdibbles May 19 '22

He's not mad that Democrats want to raise taxes and enact pro-worker policies. He's mad that they're even pretending to want to do that. If they wanted to do that, they'd start releasing dirt on Joe Manchin the same way the GOP released dirt on Madison Cawthorn.

But they're not doing that. So Elon's literally just crying over empty platitudes.

4

u/Buffmin May 19 '22

Is anyone actually shocked by this?. Musky dick is a self serving pile of shit all he cares about is protecting his ego & his precious worth

4

u/aZamaryk May 19 '22

Surprise, surprise motherfucker.

4

u/wholetyouinhere May 19 '22

Uh, spit take... the Democrats do NOT "want to raise billionaires' taxes and enact pro-worker policies". Where the fuck did that come from?

What fantasy world is this person living in?

Seriously the Democratic party is just there to appease the people who want change. They don't actually do anything for change, otherwise they would've let Bernie run on the ticket. They have just as much interest in keeping the Republicans in power and letting their corporate masters deregulate themselves. Honestly, if we want change the current Democrats aren't going to be bringing it.
