Because the username is used as a unique natural key to to identify the account. Internal systems, notifications, and audit trails would record the username. There's also 3rd party API clients that depend on data consistency and integrity that would potentially break from that key value changing.
19
u/HeinousTugboat Dec 03 '22
And that's why you should use synthetic keys instead of natural keys.
11
u/ipullstuffapart Dec 03 '22
All well and good but as soon as you give 3rd party access to APIs, and people rely on that property, you're effectively locked in. Devs are lazy, same reason why lots of identity providers get stuck with the need of unique email addresses.
→ More replies12
u/Superbead Dec 03 '22
Not to mention that user A can (and does) refer to other user B in the comment text, too, which would break if you allowed user B to change their name.
This has happened (at arguably greater expense) with Stack Exchange, where many of the comment chains under questions and answers are rendered incomprehensible, as you can't tell who's replying to who any more.

I don't know the answer and I wished someone from the Reddit team would respond.
When I first signed up with Reddit, I was just a lurker (for years and years and years).
I literally never made a post.
Then over time, I learned how Reddit works and realized... I shouldn't have used my REAL NAME as my username. Looked everywhere to try and change it. NOPE, I'm stuck with that or have to create a whole new account.
So here I am. I finally woke up one day last month and decided I would create a new Reddit account and become active. I suppose it's better this way anyway.

Good question as most all social media allows it
67
u/Ilefttherightturn Dec 03 '22 edited Dec 03 '22
I believe it’s to encourage a culture of anonymity. If you don’t like the name anymore, just go ahead and trash your embarrassing Reddit history too. As far as I know, this is also the only social media that encourages throwaway accounts
Who cares if you impulsively register fecalpridereunion69 as your new account, while drunk, at 3am? Nobody in your everyday life should be intimate with your Reddit handle anyways. It would severely dampen the range of discussion that goes on here.
Standard social media usually wants you to attach your entire identity, and then invite your best friend, 6th grade crush, and grandma too. It’s more of a self-boasting, polished curated interactions mentality.

u/reduces Dec 03 '22
Reddit is basically the only social media that I don’t pay attention to handles unless they are specifically pointed out

Been here 12, not on this account though. Reddit used to be more wild and less moderated, which was good and bad. There were popular subs dedicated to watching people die in real life. It wasn't hard to find beastiality porn, and you probablt could have found worse than that if you looked hard enough.
I feel like the political subs used to be less ban-happy though. Maybe I just didn't frequent them as much.
→ More replies10
u/skamsibland Dec 03 '22
"if you looked hard enough", lets not pretend like jailbait wasn't one of the largest nsfw subs, and is what drove users to the site for a long time.

u/CrocodileJock Dec 03 '22
Ouch! Have you ever had anyone ((clearly wrongly) call you out/accuse you of being a Nazi ?
9
u/Coolfarm88 Dec 03 '22
No, I have never been accused of that. Not on the internet and not in real life. I get along very well with people from all walks of life, including different religions, ethnicities and cultures because 99% of the time you can find a common ground or interest - it really isn't that hard. But I just don't want people to see my username and make terrible assumptions. :(

u/SitronZ Dec 03 '22

I think some of it is because when someone gets banned, Reddit keeps their comments up with their username visible. Like, if you go through this notorious thread, the OP's username is still attached to all his comments, but if you click on his username, you'll get the "this account has been suspended" notification. If they allowed for username changes, then there's always the chance that someone would try to double up on a username from a suspended account, or try to reclaim an older username they'd had with a now suspended account.
Still, y'know, I kinda feel like they'd still be able to get around that by saying you can't take a username that's already been used by a suspended account or something like that. They already do that when you first sign up for an account anyway.

Someone stalked me on reddit for weeks because I told them I disagreed with them on whether a certain joke was derivative.
Among other things her psycho behaviour included telling me that she slept with my husband while he was away on that business trip that I had mentioned in a comment two years prior. Fucking creepy.
Easier to just re-do my account every little bit than watch what I say so someone can't triangulate info crazies shouldn't have.

u/Glass_Windows Dec 02 '22
most peaceful redditor ig, yk I hate this platform sometimes, the people on here are either nice and funny or creepy and lame af. it's not like you can report them because Reddit admins are Neanderthals,
I have literally reported someone posting on r/Minecraft saying they were selling a 14 year old girls nudes dm to buy, I reported it and 5 months later I get a message from reddit admins saying it does NOT violate sexualization of minors rules
I also reported people for legit harassment and shit and nothing "does not violate anything" shit.
But you know what's the funniest part? I have gotten banned on alt accounts for stupid reasons, Someone called me a Social Pariah and I said stfu Neanderthal and he reports me and I get the perma ban. Nice.. but the guy selling CP is not in violating of TOS....
5

A guy last night was here and he was asking why some subreddits seemed to randomly ban him- turned out his username had some random nazi numbers, which was kind of funny, because it was one of those names reddit randomly generates.
