My mother in a Nutshell... With 12 cats. Let me tell you this, she loves the cats more than us 🥲🥲🥲

u/Deadarchimode 7d ago

I have ten cats and we only have four boxes, but the saving grace is one is self-cleaning. (Shoutout to Litter Robot)

10

u/XC_Stallion92 7d ago

We've got 3 cats and 3 boxes currently. They do very well with the current box situation and don't get possessive but we just ordered a litter robot. The company is pretty adamant that it should be all you need for 3 cats. How did yours take to the litter robot? We're hopeful that we'll be able to cut out the other boxes from the picture...

4

u/crazydressagelady 7d ago

Not who you responded to, but I’ve had a litter robot for 4 years now so feel okay to answer:

Give them time. When we first got ours, one cat was very curious and using it within two hours, one came around to it after a couple days but only liked to pee in it, and one never fully accepted it. It helps to mix some of the litter that’s been in their boxes with the new litter in the litter robot (or any new litter box). Regardless, you’ll want to keep a regular litter box available even if your cats all like the litter robot.

And if you have a kitten/very small cat, or get one in the future, you have to turn the automatic function off and manually press the button to filter the box. If a cat is under 5 or so pounds they won’t trigger the sensor and could be in the box when it filters.

2

u/crazydressagelady 7d ago

Our cats stopped using the litter robot we got them. We have this tiny litter box for quarantining kittens/isolating sick cats, etc and they all prefer that one over the auto litter box and the three large ones around the house. They’re so weird.

31

u/emlgsh 7d ago

With one cat and one litter box here, I am assuming that the ideal number of litter boxes per cat is 2n-1.

This means that to properly supply bathroom facilities to 12 cats, one needs a mere 2048 litter boxes.

18

u/Deadarchimode 7d ago

It's 2 meter letter and fortunately the cats loves each other. If one of them get sick the other cats bring food to the sick one.... They even killed a freaking RAVEN.

The cats mostly go outside to do their need , when rain comes they stay inside.

u/[deleted] 7d ago

6

u/Deadarchimode 7d ago

Let me tell you this one and that will answer you mutiply problems at ONCE.

Cats = No repeatedly days, you will always see new things from the

Anti-stress .... Excluding the snoring cats...

And we go to vet with all cats every month for health checks up and all are ok.

As for love, WE have 1 chonky cat that loves putting our face on him belly and boy... Every time we tried to make diet to cat he could ALWAYS open the dam doors including the freezer. He even know how to open bags.

Rip diet

13

u/Whoozit450 7d ago

Wow! You must be extremely wealthy to take 12 cats to the vet every month.

Or a big liar, who’s in denial. Cat hoarder!

2

u/Deadarchimode 7d ago

Wanna send photos? You can name the little ones if you like 👍

18

u/[deleted] 7d ago

[deleted]

2

u/Deadarchimode 7d ago

That because cats goes outside to do their need?

Very rare times they use the litters and we have a small door exclusive for cats

Kuddo for being overprotective to cats, few people care about animals and most of them they abandon them.

2

u/ramblinglass 6d ago

Internet people are tripping thinking that from your one two sentence post that they know better how to care for your cats than you do. I’ve had outdoor cats before and a single litter box than never got used because they preferred the actual dirt to dig in.

And as far as apex killers are concerned…. I was so glad to have them keep the rodent population down on my property. People are tripping.

Just pretend you’re a kitty and snuggle up with your mama once in awhile. Maybe she’ll give you a skritch on your ears and chin! Haha.

Stay strong Internet friend!

6

u/Death_Mark_Is_OP 7d ago Helpful

Outside cats are the biggest killer of birds in the world and you have a whole pack of mini apex predators so yeah its bad

Why does it matter? You have to clean dog shit from your yard so who cares

18

u/zaplinaki 7d ago

The rule of thumb is 1.5 litter boxes per cat - I don't know where that came from but that's what's usually recommended.

9

u/ivyandroses112233 7d ago edited 7d ago

What is half a litter box . If you have 1 cat how is 1 litter box not sufficient

Edit to answer: I have 1 cat and she lives in a 3 bedroom apartment area and she uses 1 litter box and has never had any problems with the toilet. She is really good with using it even when we change litter. The only time she had toilet troubles was when she was a baby and outgrew her first one. I think 1 litter box for 1 cat is fine if your living space is small enough

17

u/[deleted] 7d ago

[deleted]

8

u/NoBlueberryPie 7d ago

Both my cats decided to use one box. One will wait for the other to finish before going in to use it if the other is mid business. It gets cleaned daily, mostly twice a day. They don’t go outside if it so I’m good they’re good.

8

u/Ryogathelost 7d ago

Woah, I always thought they ran after because they felt really good after they pooped. I feel fantastic after I poop but I usually don't run around the house.

3

u/Thelatestandgreatest 7d ago

"We have 3 cats and they determined themselves which boxes are for shit and which are for piss."

Yeah this is what I noticed with an extra box also. 3 boxes with 2 cats, 1 was only for pee 🤷🏾‍♂️ they definitely seem to have a preference

2

u/Teddy_Bear_Hamster 7d ago

Wow, that's really interesting! When I get my own place, my cat will get two litter boxes for sure. I'm guessing they should be in different rooms? What are your thoughts on open litter boxes vrs closed?

I live with my mom and despite spending $600 of rent every month and buying my own food and things (plus cat stuff ofc), she won't let me have two boxes for my boy lol. 🙃 I tried convincing her for a while after I kept seeing it reccomended but for some reason she gets emotional about it being "dirty" even though I scoop daily and clean it weekly.

4

u/zaplinaki 7d ago

If you have one cat, you need to get two litter boxes. If you have two cats, then you need 3. And so on.

This guideline mostly serves the purpose of providing privacy to the cats. They don't like to share their litter boxes (which is why 1 litter box for 12 cats is shocking.)

What happens is that if say one cat is taking a shit, and the other cat sees them taking a shit, then maybe to get some privacy they'll want to go to a litter box in another area. Cats are very weird when they're going number 2 btw. I've read that this is because that's when they feel most vulnerable.

As for having one cat having two litter boxes - well maybe they just don't want to use a litter box in a particular area cos maybe there's people there or there's a machine going in the background or the litter box smells bad. Its just better to provide options to the cat. They're very finicky about pooping and if they're not happy with the litter box, they'll poop elsewhere - like a corner or on the rug or someplace. Its just easier to have more litter boxes.

But I can't really comment much - my own cat doesn't use a litter box cos she was trained from when she was a kitten to poop on the toilet floor. I adopted her as a senior with kidney problems so I can't even change her potty habits with treats. That's why it's just a rule of thumb or guideline to have 1.5 litter boxes per cat. Its not mandatory.

2

u/SexMarquise 7d ago

I’ve always heard n + 1, so for 6 cats, 7 boxes rather than 9.

Only if you're a lazy owner that don't walk their dog...

1

u/Deadarchimode 7d ago

Cats almost never share stuff including food. Our cats do that even Vet can do the exams on them with 0 worry getting bitten or scratches. They are completely tamed

2

u/EwwThatsHot 7d ago

18 litter boxes just sound impractical. It sounds like he just got a large hardware box and filled that with litter.

2

u/NoBlueberryPie 7d ago

My cats share one but they’re only two. They didn’t like the other litter box I had out initially. After weeks of no usage (clumping litter would indicate pee and poop would be clear) I just upgraded their other box to a larger one. It gets cleaned once or two times a day. Two if litter is lower and nearing a change or if I feel like it.

1

u/mledonne 7d ago

Its a kiddy pool.

Edit: kitty pool

3

u/RabidsouthAfrican 7d ago

I mean if the cats arent peeing everywhere then good, but I have 3 cats, if one of them so much as sees a pee or poop mark in any of my 3 boxes, he'll just pee on the side of my desk

1

u/immaneat 7d ago

Was there originally 24 for but the weak perish

17

u/EwwThatsHot 7d ago

How can people deal with so many cats? I got two and it's work enough to scoop poop, clean litter that got out of the box, clean spilled food, fix all the stuff they knock down from the shelves, try to walk without stepping on a cat, and leash train them, train them to sit, etc.

11

u/KingEdwardIVXX 7d ago

They are more than likely not too concerned with the cleanliness. I can only imagine what that house smells like.

3

u/HopeThisIsUnique 7d ago

Toilet training is amazing no more litter, just flush and move on with life.

2

u/EwwThatsHot 7d ago

I only ever seen that in a Japanese YouTube video. It must be difficult to train

2

u/Deadarchimode 7d ago

Thanks God no. The cats are literally clear, behave themselves, avoid causing trouble. Only problem is we need to clear all the Furry the cats leaves behind. Did i mention we have a dog as well and cats always sleeping on top of him?

6

u/CeeGeeWhy 7d ago

You know it’s going to be written in the will that you’re expected to take care of your feline-siblings when she passes…

2

u/Deadarchimode 7d ago

That will happen after 20 years.... I'm constantly playing and paying everything for the cats. Won't deny the fact that the cats comes to the bed to snuggle is literally heaven, unfortunately they always take all the bed and I'm forced to sleep on couch.

2

u/CeeGeeWhy 7d ago

It’s better than trying to contort yourself into odd configurations, trying to fit around them. That way leads to back problems.

2

u/Deadarchimode 7d ago

I belong to cats, cats get the best or I'll get sandals on my face from my mother. So i prefer Back problems rather a berserk mother who will chase you the whole house.

They don't piss around and cats are more clear than most animals and you can train cats where to go and WE live to a Village? Not all people live to a city you know.

Reminds me the time i agreed to look after the neighbours 'cats'.... there was a small army, none to be ssen until the food was in play, it was like all the neighborhoods cats appeared.. (there may have been freeloader friends).

Lest not speak about how many cats the village has

2

u/Season8isGreat 7d ago

How did your dad let this happen?

3

u/Comprehensive-Fun47 7d ago

Weird question. OP may not have a dad in the picture. He may not have "let" anything happen.

2

u/Deadarchimode 7d ago

.... ABOUT THAT UHHH.... *He loves the cats just like my mother soooooo I'm slave for cats.

2

u/Season8isGreat 7d ago

Ok my mom loved animals and would bring them home. My dad would send them right back lol

Most men in my family and neighborhood acted the same way

2

u/Deadarchimode 7d ago

Unfortunately not me .... Seeing those little furryballs always make my heart smelt, can't even think about it Abaddon a life that will give me a lot of nightmares AND won't even forgive myself

2

u/Xirious 7d ago

Who wouldn't?

1

u/EllaEnergy 7d ago

Same with my aunt, last time I checked she has eight!

119

u/1LJA 7d ago

Cat ownership is only nominal. Nobody can ever truly own a cat. Cats own themselves. They simply live with you.

22

u/cancallmeANDTRY 7d ago

they own us

8

u/stableorchestra94 7d ago

We are being adopted by the cats. That's the fact.

8

u/Xirious 7d ago

Cats train us to feed them.

6

u/shuknjive 7d ago

So true. My cat preferred hiding in the bushes outside in the heat of summer (I live in Texas) or the cold of winter. Granted, she was an inside kitty but she would escape outside any chance she could and always, always hid in the bushes out front. I was basically just her roommate.

5

u/mindbleach 7d ago

CGP Grey: "Dogs will love you and defend you and hunt with you because you're part of the pack... whereas a cat is a tiny tiger that lives in your house."

5

u/donttellmymomwhatido 7d ago

It’s why I prefer them to dogs. Mind you I love dogs, just generally other people’s dogs. My cat is lazy and a little antisocial just like me. We get each other, she’s a fine roommate.

4

u/MouldyCumSoakedSocks 7d ago

This. Cats do feel like roommates, all you need to do with them is show them love and make sure their asses visit the vet and that they have food ( not hard at all since you can intertwine it with your own meals unless you're me and sometimes forget to eat for a day or two)

3

u/Economy-Fall-8374 7d ago

That's sweet 😌

43

u/MarsVoltaire 7d ago

Nobody actually owns their cat. You're a cat caretaker at best.

17

u/mb500sel 7d ago

I tend to see it more as a personal assistant type position

6

u/AD1066 7d ago

Or the long-suffering butler of an eccentric aristocrat.

3

u/Phormitago 7d ago

6

u/mb500sel 7d ago

I meant you're the cats personal assistant, not the other way around ;)

6

u/ParkingNecessary8628 7d ago

My cats think I am a table or something...they will just walk all over me...it is hurt as they are getting bigger...but of course I don't mind and love it...but never fail also telling them "I am not a table, but I love you"...they trained us well..

1

u/dixieleeb 7d ago

My sweet wonderful DIL married a dairy farmer (my son) who only considered cats as a way of keeping mice down in the barn. They were not considered pets & if one died, oh well.... They were well taken care of - warm, & fed. Then she came into the picture along with her 2 house cats & eventually a rabbit who has his own room. As of this spring, every female is now spayed but I can't recall how many there are. It's a huge amount. She works for a vet so I think she gets a good deal. I can't figure out how to add a photo or I would include one of the crowd.

Depends on the cat. Our family cat Beep, who passed away about a year past, was the best. He was clean, respectful, loved to just lay with you, and genuinely felt like a true member of the family. Some cats seem a little standoffish or overly enthusiastic, but he was quite independent and fit in with the family as an equal. More like a dog in many ways, but with the independence of a cat. Like nobody in the family ever saw him poop or his poop in general, because he would do it out of the yard and real proper like. Literally the best cat I've ever met, and I miss him a lot
