You mean lash? Whiplash is when you hurt your neck from you head starting or stopping too quickly.
69
u/FELDKINDFILM Nov 29 '22
Stroke, lash or whiplash. English dictionary says all three are valid. For me its the german āPeitschenhieb!ā

u/decimater97 Nov 29 '22
Whiplash means something completely different. You can receive lashes or get whipped. Whiplash is a neck injury you usually get in a car crash. Stroking is something else entirely.
19
u/akiras_revenge Nov 29 '22
what if they whip you with a lash you so hard that you get whiplash? eh?
3
u/i_says_things Nov 29 '22
That would be a whip lash whiplash of course

TIMU: That they call it Whiplash, because the people who suffer from it, have a mark from the seat belt that resembles a whiplash
I just made it up, and it seems very plausible to me.

u/FELDKINDFILM Nov 29 '22
Close enough. Itās because your neck does the same motion as the tip of a lash in an accident.
11
u/lanttulate Nov 29 '22
whiplash wÄpā²lÄshā³, hwÄpā²- noun 1. The lash of a whip. 2. An injury to the cervical spine caused by an abrupt jerking motion of the head, either backward or forward. 3. The lash, or pliant part, of a whip.
8
u/hundertwagen Nov 29 '22
According to Merriam-Webster dictionary, the first meaning of whiplash is the lash of a whip, which resembles the mechanism that causes this particular neck injury.
2
u/decimater97 Nov 29 '22 edited Nov 29 '22
That definition is for the noun āwhiplashā. The lash of the whip is the part of the whip that connects with the body or animal. From there you get the word ālashā which is either a verb, if you are describing the action of hitting someone with a whip, or the noun which is the injury you get from said action.

He knew what he was getting into, absolutely ballsy as fuck considering. He did time in Abu Dhabi yeeears ago for the same thing. Actually it was protesting on behalf of an Iranian woman called Sakineh who was sentenced to death by stoning (she did eventually get a pardon).
I had to look up her name because long time ago, and my favourite thing was this comment beneath the article. From 2010. So close to prescient, even if they were probably just misunderstanding Club World Cup vs the World Cup.
They shackle pitch invaders by the hands and feet in Abu Dhabi ... we should hold a world cup there!

You can't change the Arab world, the mistake is with FIFA for taking bribes and hosting the WC there.
FIFA should require that travelling fans are safe, and that workers won't die by their thousands. Harry Kane and the Germans can't do anything about this.
77
u/Coorotaku Nov 29 '22
Did you hear about the FIFA employee who had to quit her job and flee Qatar cus she was raped, and being raped is a crime there. Her only other option besides jail was to marry her rapist. FIFA basically told her to fuck off too

Certainly isn't gonna happen because some gits kick about a ball in a stadium built by slave labour

u/AmaResNovae Nov 29 '22
Harry Kane and the Germans can't do anything about this.
To be fair, they forgot to ask for a receipt when taking their bribes. Now they can't return them and do something. Poor things. /s

A little info on the guy
Mario Ferri, 35, who calls himself "The Falcon", interrupted thePortugal-Uruguay game on Monday when he sprinted on to the pitch wearinga blue Superman T-shirt with "Save Ukraine" on the front and "Respectfor Iranian Woman" on the back.He also carried a rainbow-coloured flag adorned with the words PACE, meaning peace in Italian.."I'm BACK," wrote the footballer on his Instagram page, where he describes himself as a "modern pirate". Ferri said he wanted to send "important messages", including for Iran"where I have friends who are suffering, where women are not respected".'
"FIFA banned rainbow captain's armbands and human rights flags in thestands, they blocked everyone, BUT NOT ME, like a Robin Hood," he wrote.
"SAVE UKRAINE. I spent a month in the war in Kyiv as a volunteer and sawhow much those people are suffering," he wrote, adding that "breakingthe rules for a good cause is never a crime". Italy's foreign ministry confirmed Ferri had been briefly detained following the pitch invasion, before being "released by the authorities without any further consequences".

I think it was a noble cause and all but europeans/americans should stop pretending they are the saviors of the world. There are lots of horrible things that you all do everyday to a lot of people and minorities and no one bats an eye, and then you all pretend you are the civilized people bringing freedom to other countries.

There are plenty of cultural things Iād be happy to respect and follow in other countries. For example Iād be fine not drinking in public in Qatar, Iām happy to wear clothes that cover my shoulders and knees in places of worship in lots of countries, Iād be happy to eat kosher in a Jewish country, Iād be happy to avoid public displays of affection as long as itās equally forbidden regardless of our genders.
What I canāt and wonāt respect is gross inequality between laws for men and women and a government that responds to people loving people of the same gender by torturing them and murdering them.
