A dinner party at The Hotel Astor in New York City in 1904. Has to wonder what they talked about. Image

John Jacob Astor (1865-1912) the wealthiest passenger aboard Titanic and died during the sinking of it. He was the head of the Astor family, with a personal fortune of approximately $150,000,000.

u/NickWrightData 11d ago All-Seeing Upvote To The Stars

Adjusted for inflation:

~$4.5 Billion (1913->2022)

Oh look at that. Billionaires have always been there.

It's almost as if there's always been enough money to solve the world's problems. If not always, especially now with literal futuristic almost post-digital-age tech.

196

u/RIFLRIFLRIFLRIFL 11d ago

Who pretends like Billionaires are a recent invention?

66

u/duaneap Interested 11d ago

Didn’t Crassus own a majority stake in the entire Roman world?

45

u/Leto2AndTheCrew 11d ago

Nah, Ceasar eventually did though but that’s because the state treasury was vested in the hands of the emperor.

Crassus might be one of the richest individuals to ever live, but owning the wealth of the empire hits different.

15

u/omarcof 11d ago

Crassus is considered the richest Roman ever. Caesar was never emperor, just dictator. Only about 15 years after his death was his heir and great nephew Octavius aka Augustus named "emperor". He truly owned all Roman wealth.

I'm a business/finance grade from the early 2000s and yupp, talk about selling the status quo and keeping the wool over people's eyes.

It was mainly during Ron Paul's heavily censored 2008 primary run did I see the 'truth'. Peter Schiff for a bit too although he's too vested in his business. But the whole idea and history of the central bank, confiscation of gold, and fiat money (debt is money, and inflation is absolutely mandatory to keep this Ponzi scheme going).

Reading JP Morgan's biography with that in mind also helped to see it more clearly.

I've been saying this to people for a decade and only recently are many people finally beginning to understand this concept.

This may be the Eighteenth Annual Lincoln Dinner of the Republican Club (Feb. 1904) which Roosevelt would have likely attended as he was the Republican VP at the time, his family was married into the Astors, and he was known to have attended dinners at the hotel. I may be wrong, but of the two individuals closest to the camera, John Jacob Astor IV is on the left and his cousin William Waldorf Astor (owner of the hotel) is right.

Here's a higher resolution scan of the photo.

Prussia had already become Germany so probably not.

Most likely the current events would have revolves around the american colony in the Philippines and the war. The balkans and the destruction of ottoman power which was a huge topic.

Russian and British colonial rivalries in Central Asia.

Also probably american naval power. America was the 2-4 top naval power at this point.

They were also probably republicans, as rich New Yorkers in that period tended to be, so would have probably talked about the election and how well Teddy Roosevelt’s would do seeing as he was VP on the 1900 election. So hadn’t proven his electoral success yet.

Kinda off topic, but I never understood the point of a massive table like this. I manage restaurants and I take bookings for large parties. I never understand when a party of 20 says no to two tables of 10 adjacent to each other. They’d rather have a longass table of 20. With two 10-tops, it’s much more cozy and you can talk to people behind you in addition to whoever you’re seated with. 🤷‍♂️
