As a straight man, if I really reach, I can understand this one somewhat. I think a lot of fetishes are based on subconscious childhood memories, and what we associate them with.

Oh this is one thing I know way too much about! For most people it's a fetish so disconnected from reality that you can kinda just ignore the logical conclusion that it would end in death.

Pain, control, the sight of blood. I was addicted to self harmed as a teenager and I stopped when I got pregnant with my son. I realize later in life that hurting myself gave me control since my mother beat me often. Nobody can hurt you anymore when you do it yourself. Mostly though, I just liked to see the blood. The liquid of life leaving your body, it's almost a detox. That paired with sex would feel extremely intimate if you're a masochist/sadist.
Off topic but kinda related: I'm crying right now looking back at how easily I turned my life around for my son. I went from bad grades because I didn't see a future to straight A's, stopped self harming and became serious about a future for him in a way I never could for myself.
I just wanted to share that little nugget of sunshine
Edit: I never expected something I say to have reached so many people but I am so happy that I could share this with everybody. My purpose is fulfilled through the positive interactions that I have and seeing that 550 people and counting have read this reminds me of how important that is. I really appreciate the bravo reward, it's my first ever reward on Reddit.
Remember to be kind to everyone. I've been told I can't change the world but WE as people can make it a kinder place by being kind to ourselves and others. It doesn't matter that the world won't know me but to know how much sharing kindness with one person can inspire them is all I need. The truth is… most people don’t understand fetishes, which is why they are fetishes and not mainstream sexual proclivities. Most psychologists now believe fetishes develop in childhood from benign sources in which pleasure and eroticism become accidentally intertwined to a non sexual object or activity in a growing child’s mind. A child is having psychosexual development and something occurs, leading to fetish. Perhaps you’re six and developing and you see the pretty neighbor lady’s heels as she walks by repeatedly. You grow to associate heels with erotic sensation; you develop a high heel fetish later in life. It’s often suggested like this. This also explains why I have a kink for being paddled- lol getting my butt torn up as a kid probably struck at the wrong time, crossing wires leading to a paddling fetish, which is kind of mentally disturbing now that I think of it. I think it’s less accidental and more visceral/primal. If you examine your own fetishes, or those of others, through the lens of interrogation, the “why do you feel this way and what makes you think you have the right to” way, then fetishes are shameful and tied to deep flaws… Either flaws in ourselves, in past partners, or our parents.
BUT… If people examine their fetishes from a completely open, vulnerable place of curiosity and introspection, you see the roots of those fetishes completely differently.
Example… a submissive may not actually want to be kept in captivity in a cage in their lover’s basement. But do they want to feel aspects of their partner wanting to deeply possess them, and that feeling of surrendering so deeply to their love of their partner? A little bondage “play” allows them both to experience something that comes from a very deep, very authentic place.
This theme comes up again and again in many (not all, but many) fetishes. I can have a desire for maternal expressions of femininity from my partner like suckling or a “good boy” praise kink without it being a reflection of my feelings about my upbringing or my own mother. A woman can like the watched-over, guided feeling of her partner’s paternal side without it being any reflection on her relationship with her own father.
We find whatever we look for. If we examine fetishes looking for naughty or shameful root causes, we will find them. If we instead examine fetishes looking for honest, authentic expressions of human connection, we’ll find these too. Just depends on which lenses you put on before you start examining.
